Newsletter - October2003

Tonight the clock is going back an hour. Winter time is here again. Today the sun is shining and it is a beautiful day, it could be Summer. Go outside and the temperature is very low but a good day for a walk. Some of you may even be playing croquet! It never ceases to amaze how quickly the croquet season comes to a fin-ish. One minute the mallet is coming out of a cupboard to be given polish and ready to start again and then the next min-ute it's put away with the thought, "Perhaps I'll do better next year!" Not you of course you're a winner. Maybe I'll get into the cupboard with the mallet and my game might improve. Ah! Well.

What a wonderful Summer it has been, a pleasure not to have to cancel matches because of the rain. All of our events were able to take place outside in the sunshine. The sun umbrellas have never seen so may outings. Let's hope next year is equally as good.

Looking Back

On a lovely sunny day we had the opening of the new extension (annex). Allen and Mary Backway (Allen is our President) were there to do the honours and cut the ribbon. A very hard working band of people slaved to get the ground prepared for the extension and then they carried on fixing shelves and making it ready to store all the club paraphernalia. What a big difference it has made to the club house, plenty of room to move about and ample space for some of our get-togethers. Let me take this opportunity on your behalf to thank all those who worked so willingly to make this useful addition to the club such a success. Thank you.

"B" League

It was a great pleasure to see so many genuine beginners playing for the "B" League this year. This is what croquet is all about. Getting in there and having a go. It is better to have played and lost and not to have played at all. The team I'm sure would agree with this. We all like to win but it would become boring if we couldn't be beaten. Well done again!

Wellington 0 Plymouth 5
Plymouth 4 Taunton Deane 1
Torbay 3 Plymouth 4
Plymouth 3 Nailsea 4

Mary Backway

Some of you may know that Mary had a heart operation a few months ago and suffered a stroke. She was very poorly for a little time but she is home now and doing exceptionally well. We had a little conversation and she told me that she can walk to the bus and go shopping with Allen. She hopes to come to the coffee mornings and you will be able to see how she has improved. Well done! Mary. Croquet next year?
