NEWSLETTER   FEBRUARY 2002

The wind is howling and crashing against the house, the rain is trying as hard as it can to get in.  The day is as dark as you can get. What can I say to you?

Talk about croquet!!

(The knock on the door. The men in white coats have come to take me away.)

Live in hope, the snowdrops are out and doing their best, mine are drowning.  It is very hard to have enthusiasm for our sport at this time of year.  Nevertheless plans are underway for this coming season with all the usual croquet delights for you to enjoy.  It is surprising how quickly the season changes and there we are again ready for the off.

About this time last year, I had a little note from a member which brought a smile to my lips, perhaps it will bring a smile to your lips too.

The Season approaches

the sparrows are nesting !

SYD WAKEHAM

As you may know Syd died rather sud-denly on the 24th November, 2001.  As I was on holidays at this time, I did not know of this until the middle of January.  It was a great shock to me as I am sure it was to all of you.

Mary Backway has very kindly written the following -

Syd Wakeham joined the Croquet Club in its early days on his retirement.  Like the rest of us he had to learn the game from scratch and I even remember playing in `B' League matches with him!!  However he soon improved and with guidance from Arthur Addis became a very proficient player.  He won the Allen Backway Trophy - as a token of his expertise - in 1992, 1995 and 2001 and was generally in the final on other occasions.

Syd's natural friendliness made him a special member of the club and new members responded to his tuition as one of the tutors on coaching sessions.  He was a dependable player in the competitions of the South West Federation of Croquet Clubs and rose to play in the Federation League for many years.  He also played for the Plymouth team in the League for Advanced Play.

We shall miss Syd he was a true friend and a valuable team mate.
